School Types
The school system in Hong Kong is mainly publicly-funded, comprising over 800 public sector schools and 80 Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS) schools. Among the public sector schools, there are over 700 Aided Schools which are fully subsidized by the Government, and over 60 Government Schools which are directly operated by the Government.
Apart from publicly-funded schools, there are close to 100 private primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong, including International Schools and Private Independent Schools, all of which operate on a self-financing basis. International Schools and Private Independent Schools generally offer non-local curricula, including curricula from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programmes, etc. In addition to meeting the educational needs of non-local families settling in Hong Kong for work or investment, these schools also provide more diversified curricula and modes of teaching for Hong Kong school children.
Currently, there are 54 international schools, 7 Private Independent Schools, and 20 local schools under Direct Subsidy Scheme offering non-local curricula in Hong Kong.
